Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Day
Yesterday was pregnancy and infant loss awareness day. As it is also my anniversary date, I thought I’d wait to address this topic today.
So here we go… One in four pregnancies ends in loss. Often times women move through their grief in silence because few around them ever knew they were pregnant in the first place. I know I did. It’s a lonely journey made even more painful by well-meaning (but uninformed) people asking when we’re going to have another child.
It took us two and a half years to complete our family with Little Miss. Yesterday, I remembered the baby we lost while celebrating the baby we received. She is more than worth the wait and has healed my heart in more ways than I can express. I hold her close as much as I can (so glad she has warmed up to being worn in a carrier!) and say a prayer of thanks every time I do.
So, the next time you start to jokingly ask when a couple is going to have (another) child, I hope you will pause and consider that maybe they would desperately love to have a child, but that it might not be working out for them quite the way they had hoped.
